About Mike

The studio

Picture Day is the largest and longest-running portrait studio in Charleston, and Mike has been behind the camera at it for 27 years. In that time the Kanawha Valley has voted him its best photographer eight times, most recently in 2025.

The work does not look like school picture day, which is the point. Sets are built and kept standing in the studio, so a senior can move from a painted room to a hedge wall to a plain white wall inside one sitting. Coloured gel, haze and a single hard light do most of the rest.

Seniors, cap and gown, headshots, dance, sports, babies and birthdays all come through the same room. Sessions start at $50 and are reserved ahead of time.
